COMMUNITY

300 Families Fed During Government Shutdown

When families in San Antonio were affected by government shutdown impacts on SNAP benefits, Backyard on Broadway organized a complete meal distribution event. 300 families received comprehensive meal packages at no cost.

What Each Family Received:

  • Large handcrafted pizza (made on-site from scratch)

  • Family-sized salad

  • Cookies

  • Gallon of Red Fassionola lemonade

  • Bottled water

  • Additional canned goods

Distribution Event: Organized 5:30pm-8pm window for families to pick up complete meal packages. Required SNAP card and matching photo ID to ensure support reached those most affected.

When families in our community are struggling to put food on the table, we can’t just stand by. We call ourselves a family-friendly restaurant, and that has to mean something. If we can’t support families in times of need, then those are just empty words.

Campari Day of Service

An annual national initiative hosted by the USBG National Charity Foundation and Campari America, bringing together over 1,000 bartenders and hospitality professionals across 50+ U.S. cities every September to give back to their local communities.

Since 2018, Campari Day of Service has mobilized the bar industry to contribute thousands of volunteer hours to local nonprofits—from beach cleanups and food pantry restocking to cooking meals for shelters and building community gardens. The mission: increase hospitality industry participation in volunteer service activities where we live and work.

San Antonio Leadership:

Leading San Antonio's effort since 2021. In 2024, Ohio organized 45 volunteers—making San Antonio the 2nd largest participating group nationally. Four consecutive years of building something bigger than ourselves, proving that service extends beyond the bar to the communities we serve.

Organizations Benefited:

  • Animal Defense League

  • City of San Antonio Animal Care Services

Why This Matters: Bars and restaurants are part of the fabric of every community. Our sense of service extends beyond pouring drinks to actively improving the places we call home. Mobilizing the hospitality community to give back collectively demonstrates how invested bartenders and restaurant professionals are in making their communities better places to live.

Ronald McDonald House

Annual fundraising and cooking through the Men Who Cook Challenge. Two consecutive years supporting families of hospitalized children with meals and fundraising during critical times when families need it most.

  • 500 families served with $20-$30 worth of free fresh produce per household

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables including plums, peaches, nectarines, squash, cucumber, onion, and local citrus

  • Addressing food insecurity in San Antonio's underserved communities

Supporting programs that make fresh, healthy food accessible regardless of income—because access to quality food shouldn't be a luxury.

Industry Leadership

Board Leadership Positions:

  • Board of Directors, Alamo Area Hospitality Association (AAHA)

  • Marketing Committee Member, Visit San Antonio

  • Culinary Committee Member, Visit San Antonio

Raising Standards Through Action:

  • Board leadership focused on fair labor practices and workplace culture reform

  • Advocating for sustainable business models that prevent employee burnout

  • Promoting operational frameworks that prove quality and profitability aren't competing values

  • Television appearances advocating for industry standards and ethical practices

Policy Through Practice:

Rather than lobbying for regulation, demonstrating what's possible. Backyard's 52% retention rate isn't just a metric—it's proof that treating employees fairly, building systems with integrity, and investing in culture creates better businesses.

Education as Advocacy:

  • Free consulting for DIBS wholesale clients (sharing operational knowledge)

  • Speaking at Chilled Magazine's 1st National Conference on restaurant management

  • Spirit education that democratizes expertise

  • Ongoing mentorship of hospitality owners, operators, and managers

The most effective advocacy is showing others it can be done—then teaching them how.
